At times it can be difficult to know which fruit and vegetables are in season because so many of them are available in store year round. But if we were to imagine we could all just wander out into our own vegetable gardens and orchards here's what we would have to choose from, in season, in Autumn...
Fruit and Nuts:
- Apples (from March new-season Golden Delicious, Galas and, in an early year, Fujis: then from May Granny Smith, Pink Ladies and Lady Williams)
- Bananas
- Chestnuts
- Crabapples
- Figs
- Grapes
- Hazelnuts
- Meyer Lemon (in May)
- Macadamias (from March to April in the Barossa)
- Medlars
- Olives
- Pears
- Persimmons
- Pistachios
- Pomegranates
- Quinces
- Walnuts
Vegetables:
- Broccoli, Romanesco
- Capsicums/peppers (at their peak)
- Cardoons (early ones)
- Chervil
- Eggplants/aubergines (at their peak)
- Fennel bulbs (early ones)
- Jerusalem artichokes
- Lamb’s lettuce
- Mushrooms (wild ones such as Saffron Milk Caps, Boletus and Pine Mushrooms)
- Potatoes (Kipflers)
- Pumpkins (at their peak)
- Radicchio
- Salsify
- Silverbeet and Chard
- Spinach
- Tomatoes (at their peak)
- White Sweet Potatoes (and continuing into winter)
